The nearest village (2 km away), is a well-organized tourist resort on the coast set against the characteristic sparkling blue of the sea. Kardamena with its small harbour area and the extensive shopping district offers visitors many alternatives for local food, entertainment and of course swimming and water sports. Summer in the town also sees the organisation of many cultural events, including the ‘Alasarnia’, named after the ancient town Alasarna, as well as a number of festivals on the occasion of local religious holy days. From the harbour more adventurous travelers can visit daily by boat the neighbouring island of Nisyros known for its active volcano and the traditional village settlements of Mandraki, Nikia, and Emporeios.
